Every Wednesday between 10am and 12pm The Zone, in partnership with Tesco, opens up its doors to the FareShare scheme. Organised by the FareShare charity, this is scheme whereby our large supermarkets donate food items that are near, or have just passed their “best before” date to selected charities up and down the country in order for the chosen charity to then redistribute the perfectly good and safe to eat food items onto those less fortunate within our communities. Ultimately this aids in the on-going efforts to reduce hunger within our society and eliminate the vast amount of food wastage that occurs each year within the supermarket industry.

We never know what we’ll be receiving each week, but we usually have an array of bakery items, including breads and cakes together with a selection of fruits and vegetables to choose from. Again, these food items are perfectly safe to eat and those that benefit from this scheme will never be charged.

The Bridge MPS operates this scheme on a first-come, first-served basis and we will not respond to or facilitate requests to keep or store food items on the behest or on behalf of individuals. Also, to ensure that the food items we receive are shared fairly out amongst all those that need it, a member of staff will always be on hand to ensure that individuals take only what they need.

The only things that we do ask for in return is that those benefiting from the scheme sign a receipt register and leave a comment as to how this scheme is benefiting them (our Zone staffers are more than happy to assist in filling out the register), and if you are in a position to do so, consider leaving a small donation or perhaps purchase a tea or coffee at The Zone when you visit, as whilst The Bridge MPS operates this scheme entirely free of charge for our community, we still have to light, heat and maintain The Zone facilities.

If you would like to know more about the FoodShare scheme or would like to get involved in helping us in delivering the scheme out to our community as a volunteer, please feel free to give us a call on 01656 649378 or simply pop in to The Zone and chat with a member of staff.
